Insanely Delicious Gluten-Free Chicken Fried Steak!
Growing up as a kid, we never had chicken fried steak or country fried steak. We were more of a spaghetti and meatballs type of family.
Then when I got older and realized I needed to stay away from gluten, even trying chicken fried steak was out of the picture....unless I made a gluten-free version myself!
So that's just what I did... and this recipe is ridiculous!
It's incredibly delicious. Hands down, one of my favorite comfort dishes I make!
I dip the cubed steaks in a gluten-free batter made with an egg wash and gluten-free flour and spices.
Then the steaks are fried in a skillet while the gravy simmers, thickens, and is seasoned just right.
The last thing needed is to plate the country fried steaks beside their side dishes and drizzle or smother (depending on how much you LOVE white country gravy!) on top of your chicken fried steaks!

Gluten-Free Country Fried Steak Ingredients:
- eggs, beaten
- gluten-free flour blend
- garlic salt
- onion powder
- paprika
- black pepper
- 4 thin-cut steaks or cubed steak patties
Gluten-Free Country Gravy Ingredients:
- butter
- gluten-free flour blend
- chicken broth
- heavy cream
Easy Recipe Instructions:
- Prepare your skillet by adding ½” cooking oil to the bottom of the skillet and heat it over medium heat.
- In a medium bowl, place the beaten eggs and set aside. In another medium bowl place the flour, garlic salt, onion powder, paprika, and black pepper and mix.
- Place each steak patty in the flour and coat all sides completely. Then dredge it in the eggs bath, submerging all sides and allowing the excess to fall off the patty, before placing the patty back into the flour mixture, coating all sides once more.Immediately place the patty in the skillet of hot oil and cook for 4 minutes. Place the other three patties in the flour, egg, and flour mixture just like the first patty had, and then immediately into the oil for 4 minutes.
- After each patty has cooked for 4 minutes, carefully flip each patty to the other side to cook for another 4-5 minutes, or until each patty is cooked thoroughly. Remove from the hot oil using a spatula and placing the patties on a cooling rack that is seated on top of a paper towel or large plate for extra oil to drip off of and collect. Keep fried steaks in a warm place while making the gravy.
- To make the gravy, add the butter to the bottom of a medium saucepan over medium heat. Once melted, add in the 4 Tablespoons flour blend, and continuously mix for 30 seconds, until the liquids are fully absorbed. Add the chicken broth ⅓ cup at a time, waiting until the gravy returns to a simmer before stirring and adding the next ⅓ cup. Do the same with the heavy cream.
- Add salt and pepper to taste and allow to simmer for 5-10 minutes after all ingredients have been combined. Remove from heat. Serve the fried steaks with the gravy drizzled on top while everything is still warm.
Recipe Pro Tips:
The thinner the steaks you use, the quicker that these bad boys will cook up.
That means, that the thicker your steaks that you use for this recipe, the longer it will take for them to fully cook and prepare.
Country Fried Steak Pairings:
Try one of these dishes to partner next to your chicken fried steak!

Storing Leftovers:
Store leftovers in an airtight, food-safe container in the fridge for up to 3 days, keeping the fried steaks and the gravy in separate containers when storing in the refrigerator.
Reheating Your Leftovers:
To reheat your leftover chicken fried steak, place your leftovers in an oven-safe dish.
Place your gluten-free chicken fried steak in your oven that has been preheated to 300*F and allow to warm for 5-8 minutes, depending on how thick your steaks are and how hot you like your leftovers.

Hi! Looking forward to serving this with guests this weekend. I do have a question. Why do I need to pre heat my oven? Am I missing something?
BHHYA Team says
Oops, copy/paste issue from another recipe it seems. Thanks for the catch Shelley, it's been updated!

Which GF flour do you use? They are definitely not all created equal...
BHHYA Team says
Your best GF flour options are Bob's Red Mill Gluten Free 1-to-1 Flour, King Arthur's Measure for Measure Flour.
You can also use this custom all-purpose GF flour blend:

Delicious! Thank you for this recipe; my daughter has been missing CFS since being diagnosed with Celiac disease almost two years ago. It was a hit for everyone!

This was delicious! Thank you!! I actually made the gravy first and let it stay warm on the stove, then prepped and fried the steaks. This helped me avoid turning on the oven…we’re in Arizona and have been experiencing record heat lately, so if I can avoid the oven I do! Haha! But everything was so tasty and my entire family loved it! The white gravy recipe was especially yummy! Thanks again. I’ll be making this one again for sure! 🙂
BHHYA Team says
Awesome! Thanks for the suggestion Lynette. Agree with avoiding the oven!

Wait. Why is the oven on!???? So confused....
BHHYA Team says
Copy/paste issue haha. It's been corrected!

I absolutely loved this recipe! A hit with my husband and toddler. Nice that I could use gf flour and not wonder if it would convert well.... no one likes a gummy texture (used Bob's Red Mill GF AP flour - red bag).

Stoked that you loved the recipe Kelsey!
