Why Homemade Gluten Free Bisquick Mix?
This one minute gluten-free Bisquick mix is a little on the naturally sweet side, using coconut flour, but can easily be adjusted to your preference {and I'll tell you how!}.
Got one minute and a few simple ingredients?
Then you can have your own healthier Bisquick mix!
It is much more convenient for our family now that Bisquick makes a gluten-free version.
It's pretty good. But, there are those pesky artificial ingredients. Bahhhhh.
I decided to attempt making my own gluten-free version without the artificial placeholders in it and it worked!
There are so many uses for this homemade Bisquick mix! I use it in my pancake recipes, biscuits, and in my chicken and dumpling recipes.
Another thing to note is that this homemade gluten-free version costs a lot less for the small amount that they include in Bisquick's Gluten-Free version of their product.
So now you can definitely make all those homemade baked goods using this incredible homemade Bisquick biscuit mix instead of the expensive brand name version - and a whole lot more of it too!

I make a sausage muffin recipe using bisquick, mild pork sausage, shredded cheese, milk, powdered mustard, a little brown sugar. My grandson cannot have gluten or dairy so I used gluten free Bisquick, plant based cheese and oat milk. They were ok but not the same…I would like to use your Bisquick idea…using something else for the powdered milk
Any suggestions for a better tasting muffin???
Carol says
I would like a dairy free option also
Sheila says
I have been looking for a recipe as such, for so long, def going to try it, thanks so much.
Liz says
I previously bought the Bisquick brand gluten free mix only to find that it had: "contains bioengineered food ingredients" at the end of the ingredient list! I was so focused on "gluten free". Lesson learned..pay closer attention.
Stephanie says
Loving this! So much cleaner than the store bought. I'll be adding this to my pantry.
Laila says
Hi,
I am allergic to coconut flour can I use oat instead
BHHYA Team says
Yes you definitely can! Just make sure that it is certified gluten free

Wow I made your gluten free buttermilk biscuits today and they are absolutely heavenly!! I made a few changes to your bisquick recipe due to some additonal food sensitivites I have and just thought I would post the changes for anyone out there that has a corn sensitivity/allergy and or dairy allergy/sensitivity. I substituted dry coconut milk powder in lieu of the milk powder. I also substituted 1/4 cup tapioca starch and 1/4 cup arrowroot starch in lieu of the 1/2 cup cornstarch. I also used superfine white rice flour although I doubt that was necessary but I find with most gluten free recipes the regular white rice flour can leave a gritty texture to baked goods. OMG they came out beautifully. Moist, light and fluffy with a very mild coconut flavor, sooooooooooooo delish! Thank you for creating and sharing this wonderful recipe. It is recipes like this that make living without gluten so much easier. This will definitely be a staple in my house from here on in.
Jade says
I made this recipe as well! I did have to substitute about 1/4 of arrowroot powder for the cornstarch(ran out), fine white rice flour, and I used powdered goat milk due to A1 protein issues. It worked amazing well to make your biscuits! In that recipe I didn’t have buttermilk, but used A2 milk with white vinegar and I can attest they were amazing and fluffy and soooo good! We used to make Your recipe using gf bisquick and we are converted! Yours taste better. Not only is your recipe cheaper, but results in a better textured and tasty gf I was a little worried because of the coconut flour smell in the mix but they didn’t taste like coconut at all. Thanks so much!!!!
Robyn Bray says
So... this bakes nice biscuits without xanthan gum? I hope so!
Jess says
Hi Robyn,
Here is my biscuit recipe that uses this mix that was mentioned earlier in this post: https://blessherheartyall.com/fluffy-gluten-free-buttermilk-biscuits I hope this helps! 🙂
Michele says
What is the conversion rate when making pancakes with this vs the boxed GF Bisquick? I know that coconut flour usually requires more eggs/liquid than other GF flours. Thank you!
Jess says
Hi Michele! Great question. You can find my instructions for using this mix with pancakes here: https://blessherheartyall.com/gluten-free-pancakes-smashed-strawberry-champagne-sauce Hope that helps!
Donna says
Was wondering what else to add for waffles or pancakes. Would you follow the same directions as on a Bisquick box? Milk, eggs, oil? Thank you for this recipe. We are new to gluten free and with our large family we had to use 2 small boxes of gluten free Bisquick mix just to make waffles one time. This is very costly. Looking forward to trying this 🙂
Jess says
Hi Donna,
I have edited this post and now have incorporated links to my waffle and pancake recipes. Please let me know if you have any other questions or if you have any issues getting to these links 🙂
Heather says
Hi
Can the milk powder be replaced and still work well? If so what alternative can you suggest for lactose intolerance? Would powdered coconut milk work the same?
Thanks so much!!
Heather
Jess says
I am not sure if the milk powder can be replaced for this recipe to work out well. I have not tried it with the coconut milk powder but there is only one way to find out if it will work with this recipe. Please let me know if you try this recipe out using the coconut milk powder, I'd love to know!
DIANE says
Your recipe says to use 1/4-1/2 c sugar, but notes say for less sweet, go more toward 1/2 cup sugar side. Is that a typo? Shouldn't it be 1/4 cup to be less sweet?
Jess says
Yes! Thank you for seeing my mistake! It should read "1/4 cup to be less sweet". I will change that in the recipe! Thank you for catching that error! Much appreciated! 🙂
monika says
Can I use arrowroot or tapioca starch instead of cornstarch?
Jess says
You sure can try the other starches out if interested, but I know that the cornstarch definitely does work well for this recipe 🙂
Vicki says
I can't wait to try this...especially as dumpling!. Just one thing, I can't find where you say how to use it to make biscuits. Did I miss the link somewhere? Thank you!
Jess says
I'm glad that I peaked your interest! here is the link to the actual biscuits: https://blessherheartyall.com/fluffy-gluten-free-buttermilk-biscuits That should help! 🙂
Cheridal Nicholson says
Hey, great idea! But you left off directions for actually MAKING the biscuits! Like how much butter, milk, ?? Baking time and temp. I guess I can figure it for myself but since you made the mix, won't you tell us how to make the biscuits? Thanks!
Jess says
Absolutely Cheridal! Here is the link to the buttermilk biscuits: https://blessherheartyall.com/fluffy-gluten-free-buttermilk-biscuits Let me know if you need anything else...I'm happy to help! 🙂
Nancy Geigle says
Thrilled to find this Gluten Free Bisquick recipe. Will using powdered buttermilk work in this mix?
Jess says
Hi Nancy! Glad that this recipe peaked your interest. I have not tried powdered buttermilk in this recipe before, but I would be apt to say that the "real deal" would make for a smoother dough and a more fluffy and moist biscuit.
Mardee Thompson says
I am also excited to make some of these biscuits for my son who has trouble with gluten. Do you have a recipe to make up a batch?? Milk, shortening ? I would appreciate it.
Jess says
Absolutely! Here is the link for the biscuits: https://blessherheartyall.com/fluffy-gluten-free-buttermilk-biscuits I hope your son loves them! Let me know if you have any other questions that I can help answer 🙂
Jamie says
I love this recipe, however it doesn't tell me the proportions for making pancakes or biscuits. Do i need to have a Bisquick box in front of me in order to know I need cup of mixture with 1 cup of milk to make pancakes?
Jess says
Hi Jamie! The recipes for the pancakes and biscuits are listed above in the post. Here's the link for the pancake recipe:https://blessherheartyall.com/gluten-free-pancakes-smashed-strawberry-champagne-sauce and here's the recipe for the biscuits:https://blessherheartyall.com/fluffy-gluten-free-buttermilk-biscuits Hope that helps!
