A while back, I was excitedly preparing for a new Asian dish to make for my family for dinner. I was so excited to try it out...until I saw an ingredient on the list that I had overlooked.
Hoisin sauce.
What the heck is hoisin sauce???
Is it gluten-free? Is it safe for me to eat?
If it isn't...how do I make it gluten-free?
So many questions...I just had to investigate. I was in the middle of a recipe. And investigate I did.
While it was hard difficult non-existent to find a gluten-free hoisin sauce at any grocery store around me, I did look up quite a few recipes for hoisin sauce online. I got the gist of what was included in the delicious sounding sauce, so I decided to make it up on my own with a simple and yummy list of ingredients that I had on hand at home.
And as far as what it actually is...well, in my own words, it's used as a Asian BBQ-like glaze on meat or as a dipping sauce in Asian cuisines...and it is yummy friends.
It. Is. Yummy.

In my own version of hoisin I use a little tahini instead of the peanut butter. I add a little dry sherry for rich sweetness and a teaspoon of tapioca flour for thickening.
