Best Sweet and Spicy Onion Rings!

Hey hey! Y’all we made it to Friday {she gets up and throws up her ‘whoop’ hands}!  How fast did this week go?  Dang it went by quick.

Looking back on the week (and the week before) I realized how popular those BBQ + Buttermilk Onion Rings were and thought to myself, “self, why don’t you go throw another onion ring recipe out there and make the world a happier place?“

Well I’ll be, that girl went out there and did it.  Again.

I concocted another hella good version of my onion rings with a sweet and spicy twist, introducing the Honey Sriracha Onion Ring to the fam.

I’ll give ya a moment to let it sink in .

The rings are once again crispy, crunchy, and fresh.  Then you add spicy Sriracha chili paste for some sizzle and fresh honey to tone down the fire a bit and add some sweet afterthoughts.

Do I have your attention yet? Good. If I haven’t mentioned this fun fact yet, then let me tell ya, these are also super simple to make and don’t take long at all.

Let’s get to goin’, shall we?

Don’t be afraid of a little extra honey and sriracha for a little drizzle over top of your rings too.  It’s delicious!

Ingredient List:

  • white rice flour
  • 1 egg, beaten
  • buttermilk
  • sriracha
  • honey
  • onions cut into rings 1/2 thick
  • black pepper
  • paprika
  • cayenne pepper
  • granulated garlic or garlic salt
  • oil for frying
  • salt to taste

Onion Ring Directions:

  1. Heat a large skillet over medium heat with 1/2-1 inch of oil. In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, salt and pepper, cayenne, paprika, and garlic together.
  2. In another mixing bowl, combine the egg, buttermilk, sriracha, and honey. Place each onion ring in the liquid egg mixture, dredging it, allowing excess to drip off of it, and then directly placing it in the flour mixture, being sure to coat the entire ring.
  3. Quickly place each ring in the hot oil and allow to turn a golden brown (approx. 1-3 minutes each side). Once golden, flip the onion ring over and allow the second side to brown.
  4. Carefully remove the onion ring from the skillet and place on a paper towel-lined baking sheet. Allow to sufficiently cool before enjoying!

Storing Your Leftovers:

First, I highly recommend letting the onion rings that you plan on storing as leftovers, cool down to room temperature before considering to store them.

That will prevent a lot of extra moisture buildup in your storage container and less moisture to make your leftover onion rings soggy.

Place your cooled onion rings in a food-safe airtight storage container and put it in the refrigerator for up to 2 days.

To reheat your chilled leftover onion rings, place your onion rings on an oven-safe plate or baking sheet and let them cook in a warmed-to- 325*F oven for 3-5 minutes.

Alternatively, if you have an air fryer, you can pop your leftover onion rings in the bottom of your air fryer, making sure that they are not touching one another, and air fryer at 325*F for 3-5 minutes or until your preferred warmth is achieved.

I recently did an crispy fried onion post, too, and man! It’s all I can think about!!! Which isn’t helping me in my efforts to reverse the effects of over-indulging on our summer vacation. I love that the onion is coated in the sauce before the flour. Layers and layers of flavor….mmmm…..
