Are Bread Crumbs Gluten-Free?
Nope. Not the regular kind of bread crumbs. Those that you purchase from the store.
Regular breadcrumbs used to coat meats like chicken on chicken nuggets or as toppers for casseroles and hot dishes, are simply crumbled and baked bread, bread with gluten in it.
In order for bread crumbs to be gluten-free, you must first use gluten-free bread and then make sure your spices are gluten-free as well!
What to use panko bread crumbs for?
You can use this panko bread crumb recipe for anything that you would use a store-bought or non-gluten-free version for.
Things like breaded chicken nuggets, crispy fish recipes, as crunchy topping in your favorite casserole dishes like Chicken Poppyseed Casserole, and even chicken parmigiana!

You are going to need just a few things.
First, you'll need gluten-free bread. The brand of bread does not necessarily matter.
This is because you are going to be cutting it up into tiny bits and baking it until it's crunchy. So it's not going to matter so much if this gluten free loaf of bread is hard and crumbly or soft and fluffy.
Udi's Gluten-Free White Bread is easily accessible at my local Kroger grocery store so that is what I typically use for making these bread crumbs.
There are other more expensive brands I could pick up, but I wouldn't know the difference between the breadcrumbs once finished, so why spend more money when you don't have to?
The brand of bread does not matter but the type of bread does.
You are going to want to use a white bread or a whole wheat bread. My preference is white bread for the best consistency in our finished breadcrumbs.
How do you make gluten free bread crumbs?
For a detailed list of ingredients and instructions, scroll down to the recipe card.
- Step One: Prep your kitchen. Preheat your oven to 350*F and spray a baking sheet that has 4 sides to it with cooking spray.
- Step Two: Cut your gluten-free bread loaf into chunks. Place the bread chunks and italian seasoning in a food processor or blender and pulse until finely blended.
- Step Three: Place the bread crumbs on the baking sheet in a thin even layer and spritz with a touch more cooking spray and Italian seasoning.
- Step Four: Bake in the oven for 5 minutes before taking the bread crumbs out, giving them a good stir, and placing them back in the oven for an additional 5 minutes of baking time, then remove from oven,
Pro Tips:
Depending on how large your baking sheet is and how thick a layer of breadcrumbs you are dealing with, you may need to continue baking your bread crumbs for an additional 5 - 10 minutes, making sure to stir in between each set of 5 minutes.
How do you know when the bread crumbs are done baking?
You will know when 80% of the crumbs have turned a darker shade of golden brown from the original color of the bread crumbs before they went in the oven to bake originally.
How to store leftover breadcrumbs:
These breadcrumbs store really well!
Simply place your cooled bread crumbs in an airtight freezer-safe storage bag with all the extra air removed.
You can store the bread crumbs at room temperature for up to a week.
Or. you can store your breadcrumbs for much longer in the freezer!
Can you freeze bread crumbs?
Label the bag with the date and place it in your freezer.
Whenever you need to use your breadcrumbs, just take however much the recipe calls for out of the storage bag and keep the rest back in the freezer.
The breadcrumbs will last up to 6 months in the freezer when stored appropriately!
Yes, you can!
