Oh my goodness do I have something good for y'all on this marvelous Saturday!
I haven't had an onion ring in FOREVER {girl got the craving!}. It's hard to find a gluten-free onion ring in these parts to scarf down, a delicious one is non-existent in Atlanta. But that's not a problem now that this hella' good recipe is here!

Flavors of These Onion Rings:
The little bit of barbecue sauce that is in the recipe just adds a touch of the taste to each crispy ring. It's a fantastic twist really. Add a side dipper of extra barbecue sauce if your taste buds are screaming for more of the barbecue flavor!
Onion Ring Ingredients:
- 1 ½ cups white rice flour
- 1 egg, beaten1 cup buttermilk
- 2 tablespoon BBQ sauce
- 2 inch onions cut into rings ½ thick
- 2 teaspoon black pepper
- 2 teaspoon paprika
- 1 teaspoon cayenne pepper
- 1 teaspoon granulated garlic or garlic salt
- oil for frying
- salt to taste
Buttermilk Onion Ring Directions:
These BBQ + Buttermilk Onion Rings are pretty simple. Ya just dunk sweet onion slices in the buttermilk mixture {and then the fun and slightly messy part}, then into the flour mixture, fry them up for a few minutes, and you are left with a barbecue-y rendition of a classic American favorite!
For a full detailed instruction guide, scroll down to the recipe card!
- Heat a large skillet over medium heat with ½-1 inch of oil.
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, salt and pepper, cayenne, paprika, and garlic together. In another mixing bowl, combine the egg, buttermilk, and barbecue sauce.
- Place each onion ring in the liquid egg mixture, dredging it, allowing excess to drip off of it, and then directly placing it in the flour mixture, being sure to coat the entire ring.
- Quickly place each ring in the hot oil and allow to turn a golden brown (approx. 1-3 minutes each side). Once golden, flip the onion ring over and allow the second side to brown.
- Carefully remove the onion ring from the skillet and place on a paper towel-lined baking sheet.
- Allow to sufficiently cool before enjoying!

Gosh I can almost hear the crunch. We use rice flour a lot and mix it with all purpose flour for the extra crunch. I'm definitely trying out these rings. They look fantastic!

Never ever tried to make onion rings, even though I like them a lot! Your recipe looks easy to make, but allow me to exclude BBQ sauce. Was thinking to replace it with plain tomato pulp....
J Trogstad says
You should definitely try making your own onion rings, they are easier to make than you think! And if you aren't a BBQ fan, by all means, take it out completely, or yes, the tomato pulp sounds like it may be really good with it too! Great idea!
Erin @ Thanks for Cookin'! says
Wow, what a cool idea to add some extra flavor! Could you make these with regular AP flour, too?
J Trogstad says
Yes, you sure could Erin. I used the white rice flour because of my food allergies. All-purpose flour would work the exact same here 🙂
